Trenchless methods
A sewer pipe lining job in Orange County, from the cleanout to the final video
The easiest way to understand cured-in-place pipe lining is to follow a crew through a single day on a lateral in Orange County. Here is what happens, in order, and what the three common Orange County host pipes do to change it.

Early morning: finding the cleanout and setting up
The crew arrives at a house in Orange County with a known problem: a camera run the week before showed a lateral with cracked joints and roots from the front yard to the sidewalk. The first task is access. On a 1960s tract house the cleanout is often a capped stub near the foundation; on a newer south-county home it may be a two-way fitting at the property line. If there is no cleanout at all, the crew will install one, because everything that follows goes in and out of that opening. The homeowner is asked to stop running water, and the equipment trailer parks where the hoses reach.
Jetting the host and what comes out of it
A liner bonds to the shape of the pipe wall, so the wall has to be clean. A hydro jetting nozzle sized for the lateral is run the full length, cutting roots, flushing silt and knocking scale loose, and the debris is captured at the cleanout rather than pushed toward the city main. Then the camera goes back in to confirm what the jetting revealed. This is the moment the job can change. A pipe that looked merely rough before cleaning sometimes turns out to have a hole or a dropped joint behind the scale, and that is a conversation to have before any resin is mixed.
Three host pipes a crew working in Orange County meets
Orange County laterals tend to be one of three things, and each asks something different of the liner:
- Coastal cast iron. Near the beach cities the salt air and brackish groundwater eat iron from the outside while the sewage pits it from the inside. The bottom of the pipe goes first, so the camera is checking for a thinned or missing invert. As long as the top half still holds the shape, the liner can bridge a channel in the bottom.
- Clay with open joints. Short clay sections laid in the alluvial soils of the inland tracts move with wet and dry seasons until the joints offset. A liner spans a small offset without trouble; a large one is measured and may be ground down or sleeved first so the liner does not wrinkle there.
- Orangeburg that is still round. This bituminous fiber pipe softens and blisters with age. If the jetting pass and the camera show a true circle, the liner goes in and freezes it in that shape. If it has already begun to flatten, the crew will stop and recommend bursting instead of lining a pipe that has lost its geometry.
Wetting out the liner and sending it in
With the length measured from the footage counter, a felt or fiberglass liner is cut, saturated with resin on site and either inverted with air or water pressure or pulled into place by a winch line run through the pipe earlier. Inside the host it is inflated so the resin side presses against the pipe wall from the cleanout to the chosen end point. On a partial repair that end point might be short of the main; on a full-length job it runs to the tap.
Curing and reopening the branches
Heat does the rest. Hot water, steam or ultraviolet light, depending on the system the installer uses, hardens the resin into a new pipe inside the old one. During the cure the house stays off the drains, and the crew monitors temperature at both ends so the liner cures evenly. Once hard, a robotic cutter travels back through the new pipe and opens every lateral branch that the liner covered, guided by the camera so the openings land squarely on the original fittings.
The final camera pass and the file you keep
The last act of the day is another full recording, this time of a smooth, seamless wall from end to end, with each reinstated branch visible. That video, with the pre-lining footage and the permit, is the homeowner's proof that the work was done and what it looked like at completion. It is worth keeping with the house papers, because a future buyer's inspector will want to see it.

Questions we hear about sewer pipe lining (cipp)
Will a liner fit inside my four-inch cast iron drain in Orange County?+
Yes. The liner is sized to the measured inside diameter of the cleaned host, and after curing it takes a fraction of an inch off the bore. Because the cured wall is smooth where the old iron was rough and scaled, flow through the lined drain is usually better than it was before, not worse.
My Orangeburg lateral is still draining. Should it be lined now or replaced later?+
If the camera shows the pipe is still round, lining it now is the lower-disturbance option and stops the slow blistering and delamination that Orangeburg goes through. Once it has flattened into an oval, a liner would simply copy that shape, and pipe bursting becomes the better repair. The recording tells you which stage yours is at.
What is the smell during curing and is it a concern?+
Styrene-based resins give off a sharp odor while they cure, which can drift through dry traps and into the house. The crew fills traps and vents the line, and the smell clears after the cure. Other resin systems have less odor. Ask which resin is being used on your Orange County job and how the house will be vented.
Does lining the lateral require a permit in Orange County?+
A plumbing permit from the city building department is standard, and if the lined length runs under the sidewalk or into the street an encroachment permit is added. Some cities and the sanitation district ask to see the connection at the main. The contractor handles the filings; your copy of the permit belongs with the inspection recording in your records.
How long do the drains have to stay off while a liner cures?+
The liner is usually installed and cured within one working day, and the fixtures are back in use that evening once the final camera pass confirms every branch is open. You will be asked not to run water from the time the liner goes in until the crew says the line is ready. Call (949) 267-3595 to set a date. Estimates are free; call now.
